Will Eating Late At Night Make You Gain Weight?

Late-night eating doesn't cause weight gain — total daily calories do. The timing only matters when it changes how much you consume.

Will Eating Late At Night Make You Gain Weight?

This question comes up all the time, and if you've followed my content, you know the golden rule of weight loss: a calorie deficit. That means if you eat fewer calories than you burn, you'll lose weight – simple as that.

So, where does the idea come from that eating late makes you gain weight?

Some people lose weight by setting an early cut-off time, like stopping eating after 5:00 p.m. But here's why it works: by cutting off eating in the evening, they naturally consume fewer calories, creating that all-important calorie deficit.

To be clear: it's not the timing but the total calories you eat in a 24-hour period that matters. You could eat at 11:00 p.m. and still lose weight, as long as you're in a calorie deficit.

Focus on burning more than you consume, and you'll see the results – regardless of the time of day you eat.
